The B-24 Liberator was manufactured in larger numbers than any other U.S. bomber during World War II. The prototype was created by the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation, with the first XB-24 taking flight on December 29, 1939. It incorporated the innovative Davis wing design, which allowed the B-24 to transport the same payload as its competitor, the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, but with significantly enhanced speed and range. More than 18,000 Liberators were produced throughout the war. Among all the European missions involving B-24s, the initial attack on the Ploesti oil refinery in southern Romania on August 1, 1943, stands out as the most dramatic, as it faced intense defenses from anti-aircraft artillery and squadrons of the German Luftwaffe and Royal Romanian Air Force fighters. Out of the 164 B-24s that participated, 53 were either shot down or lost during the mission, 23 were forced to land, and only 88 made it back to base. “Jerk’s Natural,” which is the focus of this kit, was one of the survivors from the Ploesti bombing group.
