PM Hobbycraft and the GST Holiday

At PM Hobbycraft, we understand the significance of the Canadian Federal Government’s GST Holiday and the effort it represents to support Canadians during this time. Implementing this change has not been without its challenges, but we’re working diligently to ensure compliance with the mandate.

As a business, PM Hobbycraft has long served as a tax collector on behalf of the government. While we would certainly prefer not to collect taxes at all, our role is to follow the law and maintain trust with our customers and community. We want to assure you that we are committed to adhering to this policy—not for profit, but because it’s our responsibility as part of the broader system to bring joy to families this holiday season.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support!

What Will Be GST-Exempt and What Will Not?

The list below provides examples of GST-exempt items based on the Canadian Federal Government’s criteria. While not exhaustive, it should give you a clear idea of what to expect when shopping in-store or online. For full details, please refer to the official information linked above.

RC Vehicles: Some RC surface vehicles (cars, trucks, tanks, boats, and aircraft) will qualify for GST exemption as they are classified as “toys that imitate another item, whether real or imaginary.” Only RC vehicles labeled for ages under 14 will qualify. Vehicles marked for ages 14 and up, as well as parts and accessories, do not qualify for the exemption.

Plastic Models: Certain plastic models are GST exempt because they “involve building, creating, or assembling a structure.” Only those intended for ages under 14 are eligible. Models marked for ages 14 and up, along with paint, glue, and accessories, are not exempt.

Diecast Models: Some diecast models may qualify as toys and be GST exempt if labeled for ages under 14. Items with no age marking or those labeled for ages 14 and above are considered collectibles and do not qualify.

Puzzles: All “jigsaw puzzles” are GST exempt regardless of age restrictions. However, other types of puzzles—such as wooden or metal 3D puzzles—fall under the “assembly model” category and are only exempt if intended for ages under 14. Wooden puzzles, metal puzzles, brain teasers, and similar products for ages 14 and above do not qualify. Puzzle mats and glue are also not exempt.

Rockets: Most model rocket kits and starter sets are GST exempt as they involve building and are considered toys. However, kits labeled for ages 14 and up are not eligible. Accessories like engines, igniters, and recovery wadding do not qualify for exemption.

Children’s Toys: Any toy designed for play or learning and intended for ages under 14 will qualify for the GST exemption.

Games: Board games and card games designed for ages under 14, including game parts, add-ons, and booster packs, qualify for the GST exemption. Games and gaming accessories for ages 14 and above do not qualify.
